Situated in the valley of the Roaring Fork River, just 15 minutes northwest of Aspen along Highway 82, the tiny enclave of Woody Creek’s epicenter is a log cabin built in the 1940’s by the Lee Jones family. It now houses the infamous Woody Creek Tavern, where the late, acclaimed journalist Hunter S. Thompson bellied up to the bar every night. Its peaceful, ranch community roots are still intact, with home offerings ranging from modern homes on the river to expansive equestrian estates. Upper Woody Creek Road provides quick access to the legendary ghost town of Lenado, which opens up to hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails in the White River National Forest.
