Spring Skiing & Market Conditions
I've spent the majority of my life living in Aspen Snowmass, which means I have seen everything from pre-Thanksgiving waist-deep powder days to slushy, spring-like conditions in early February. When an entire winter industry relies on one of the only things we can't control (weather), inevitably, some seasons will be better than others. While snowfall hasn't been "ideal" this season, allow me to add some context to Bloomberg's unsubstantiated claims in this Instagram post (do yourself a favor and read the top 10 comments for boots-on-the-ground insights).
While I typically enjoy Bloomberg articles, this piece relies on sensationalism from someone on the outside looking in to drive engagement, i.e., "Gone are the days when you wondered if snowstorms would prevent your flight from landing. Now you worry whether there's enough snow on the ground to ski at all." Ski at all = textbook sensationalism. To counter, here are a few facts about Aspen Snowmass this season:
- We've consistently had the most acreage open in all of Colorado (and Utah) all winter with more than 5,000 acres across four mountains.
- Expert terrain like the Highlands Bowl and Hero's have skied great and consistently held on to snow, while other resorts haven't been able to open their steeper or hike-to terrain.
- Last weekend, Ullr gifted Aspen Snowmass with a snowstorm that surpassed forecasts. Aspen and Snowmass mountains totaled 16 inches in a 48-hour window, laying a solid foundation for superb spring skiing ahead.
- Like any low snow year, hotel and rental vacancies are up, but these are temporary stats and no cause for panic. Why? The Aspen Snowmass residential sales market experienced an incredibly strong Q4 (see our 2025 Q4 report here) and 2026, while showing a slight decline in momentum, remains marked by historically low supply and high demand. Groomers have been solid all season, and recent resort upgrades, such as new restaurants and terrain, make Aspen Snowmass an exceptional place to ski, powder or not.
There exists a pervasive sentiment among high-spirited locals with a deep passion for skiing: If you only have fun on powder days, you aren't really skiing. Some of my favorite days consist of bluebird groomer laps with my best friends and family, followed by a refreshing beer and bowl of chili at the Sundeck. Talk to any local about this season, and with a big smile, they will tell you how much fun it's been as they recall the lifelong memories created in the 2025-2026 winter season.
Additionally, if snow conditions were the only factor driving residential sales, I'd be out of a job. No other ski resort in North America offers the breadth and depth of cultural, culinary, and entertainment amenities that Aspen boasts on a weekly, even daily basis. Even non-skiers have the time of their lives in our little town with a national reputation.
